RECORD BREAKERS .... Manchester United celebrate a record 19th league triumph in 2011

United won Division Two at the first attempt but would not challenge for the title under Tommy Docherty, who just had a 1977 FA Cup win to their name.

Ron Atkinson won two FA Cups but also failed in the league and it took the appointment of Alex Ferguson in 1986 to end their long wait for divisional honours.

Ferguson struggled in his early years until FA Cup glory in 1990 and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991.

United landed their first title since 1967 in the Premier League’s inaugural season and won the Double in 1994.

With Eric Cantona and an outstanding crop of homegrown talent more titles followed in 1996 and 1997.

But their growning moment came in 1999 when they beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final with two goals in injury time to become the first English side to win the Treble.

They went on to win three consecutive titles, a feat they repeated between 2007 and 2009, and landed a second Champions League in 2008 when they beat Chelsea on penalties.

An English record 19th league trophy came in the 2010/11 season but they missed out on a 20th in 2012 when Manchester City took their title on the last day of the season on goal difference.

BOBBY DAZZLER ... Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton

IN 20 years at the club, Bobby Charlton amassed one of the best records in football history.

In 758 appearances, the forward from the North East scored 249 goals and won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year Award, the European Player of the Year Award, three league titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup.

The nephew of Newcastle great Jackie Milburn, he scored twice despite being injured during his debut against Charlton in 1956 but wouldn’t go on to become a first team regular until the following season.

Charlton’s place was secured following 10 goals in the 1956/57 season as the Busby Babes won their inaugural league title.

Aged 20, he was one of the few survivors of the 1958 Munich air disaster in 1958.

And Charlton was a vital part of the post-Munich rebuilding, playing a key role in the club’s league titles in 1965 and 1967.

He was also part of Sir Alf Ramsey’s England side that won the World Cup in 1966 and claimed the tournament’s Golden Ball. His performances on both the domestic and international stages also earned him the Ballon d’Or the same year.

He was named in FIFA’s World Cup All Star Team after the 1966 and 1970 tournaments and was honoured in the all-time greatest World Cup team in 1994.

Charlton remains England’s all-time record scorer with 49 goals.

Winning the World Cup is seen as his ultimate triumph.

But his greatest moment as a Manchester United player came when he captained the side to victory over Benfica in the 1968 European Cup Final, scoring twice in a 4-1 win.

After finishing his career he became a director at United after a brief stint in Wigan’s boardroom.

And having already been given an OBE and CBE, he became a knight in June 1994.
